Good Health and Yoga

It seems that yoga is in the news constantly. Maybe it catches my eye as an instructor, but yoga asana, breath work and a philosophy of mindfulness seem to be in every magazine and frequently in the daily press too.

Yoga Moodra now has a Facebook page, and last week I shared an article that outlines some recent research indicating yoga's value in preventing or alleviating osteoporosis. I feel certain that there will be more of this research in the future as individuals seek alternatives to reactive measures for "treating illness" and look instead for preventive treatments for better health. Yoga is becoming a part of the integrated health movement because health care professionals and yogis themselves have seen its valuable benefits for a variety of health concerns.

With all this in mind, I hope that those of you that are hesitant to try yoga will take a chance to experience the practice. There are lots of yoga styles and lots of yoga teachers out there; you surely can find a place for yourself in the yoga community. (That goes for the men out there too....yoga is NOT a girl thing and in fact was first practiced exclusively by men). Get in touch with me if you have questions about whether yoga practice is right for you. For those of you that are enjoying and already reaping the benefits of your yoga practice...tell others about it!

Whether you are returning to a yoga practice or just stepping onto the mat for the first time, I hope that you'll join me in a Yoga Moodra class. Make 2016 your best and healthiest yet!

New Class!

Along with the 3 weekly classes that I lead in area churches, I am pulling together a new class in a new location in January! The class will be held in a nice open space that belongs to Hilltop Family Chiropractic in Eagan (1121 Town Centre Drive).
Class dates will be Wednesdays from 4:30-5:30pm on January 6,13, 20, 27, and February 3 and 10.
Cost for 6 classes is $70. The room space will limit the number of participants, so don't delay if you are interested in participating in the class!
See the side bar on the left for the dates/times of my other on-going class sites.
Make yoga practice a part of a healthy and happy 2016. See you back on the mat very soon!

Holiday Stress Busting Tip

This Holiday season, vow to do only one thing at a time. Recent research on the brain tells us that "multi-tasking" is a myth. The brain can only think about one thing at at time, so if you are driving a car and talking on the phone, you are engaging in rapid shifts in attention, from the phone, to your driving, back to the phone, and to driving. You are not doing both tasks with optimal efficiency.

So, at this stressful time of the year, save yourself from multi-tasking. If you are driving; drive. If you are eating, sit down and eat and notice the food! Doing one thing at a time helps us to focus and be more effective at the task at hand. It also helps us feel less scattered and we're able to be more "present" with others.

Do one thing at a time. You'll enjoy the holidays more fully and feel more relaxed while you do.

One week from today....

In one week, the Christmas holidays will be over! After so much preparation and lead-up to the Holiday, sometimes the last week of December and early January can feel kind of like a letdown.
I think this may be yet another reason that the tradition of New Year's Resolutions got started (someday I'll have to see if I can research the origins). Certainly the end of one calendar year and the start of another year is a point in which we look back at the year that was, and begin to consider the year that lies ahead. Maybe we are also just a bit bored and discontent with the status quo, the darkness of winter, or not feeling our best after too many holiday parties, goodies, and dealing with tiresome relatives!

January 1st is a new beginning (although I'd argue that each moment and each day is an opportunity to start again) and a new year full of potential and possibility. I hope that all of you will join me in time together "on the mat" in 2016. If you are reading this as a potential "yogi" I encourage you to contact me by phone or email if you have questions about whether Yoga Moodra classes are a good fit for you. Have a look at the website for class information and read through the detailed description of the January Workshop titled Live Your Yoga: Love Your Body and Transform Your Health (meant just for those New Year's Resolutions!). Be deliberate about making some healthy decisions for yourself in 2016.

In the meantime, enjoy the next week. Merry Christmas!

Do you take your health for granted?

For most of us, we are busy people that take for granted our own good health. Even if we are experiencing health issues, or our bodies are sending us subtle or not so subtle messages that things are less than ideal, we often dismiss these cues and put off truly paying attention to our bodies.

Really, do you want to wait for a health crisis before you decide to make some positive changes? I'll bet that if you are like me, you have lots to do and lots of dreams that you are hoping to fulfill. Why not start NOW to be at your very best and feel that you are truly "firing on all cylinders?"

In 3 short weeks, we will be marking the end of another year and looking forward to 2016. I hope that you'll join me in my January Workshop entitled: Live Your Yoga: Love Your Body and Transform Your Health. It will be a month long effort to support, teach and nurture you as you begin a personal journey toward health, vitality and wellness in 2016.

Go to the website to register! Don't wait, only 5 spaces remain!

Holiday Class and Celebration

Just a quick reminder that I am offering all current and former Yoga Moodra students a FREE class and holiday gathering time THIS MONDAY, December 14th at Advent United Methodist Church (next to the Art House on Lexington Ave in Eagan). The class will run from 4:30-5:30pm and I'll bring some holiday treats and snacks for us to share from 5:30-6pm.

I appreciate each and every one of you! This free class is my Christmas gift and way of thanking each of you for bringing your energy and beautiful presence to each of my classes.
Hope to see you on Monday!

Slowing down

As the holiday season ramps up, sometimes it can start to make me a bit anxious as I try to "get everything done." This season, I am trying to be deliberate about slowing down. If you were in yoga class last week, I was repeating the theme of doing one thing at a time and being deliberate about each action. Unfortunately, we can see examples everywhere we go of people rushing and getting exasperated and it typically does not bring out the best in us!

So breathe deeply this December. Take time for walks and exercise and yoga and make deliberate choices about what is best for you and your family this holiday season. Use your yoga training to stay focused and calm and come back to your breath when you start to feel frazzled or stressed.

As a reminder, this is the last week of Yoga Moodra classes for 2015!!! I hope that all of you will plan to attend the FREE class and Holiday celebration that I have planned for next Monday December 14th. It is my gift to each of you this season, as what I love the most about holiday time is parties, celebrations, connection and TIME TO BE WITH others I care about.

Have a terrific week! Take it slow! See you on the Mat!

Reasons Why

Some of you may be wondering why I am choosing to offer the month-long yoga workshop in January called Live Your Yoga: Love Your Body and Transform Your Health.

First of all, I am really passionate about helping and supporting people to be their best. In my job as a therapist (clinical social worker) I help people "change their minds" about how they approach life problems and help them find their own internal resources to move through painful experiences.

Second, as many of you know, the practice of yoga has been a hugely important and healing part of my own life. (I have a page on my website called A Healing Journey that tells more about this if you are interested!) When you come across something that has been super helpful to you, naturally you want to tell others and hope that they can enjoy some of the benefits that you enjoy. This is the reason I became a yoga teacher: so that I can share the power of yoga teachings and practice with others in the hopes of making my small corner of the world a bit better place.

The workshop is intended for anyone with a desire to make some changes for the better in the New Year. For some, that may be weight loss, for others, it might be a change in their eating habits in order to feel better physically. I believe a reason why we struggle with healthy living is, at its core, a faulty belief system that we are somehow "less than" or unworthy of self love. Add a layer of shaming that is often a part of our consumer culture and media as a way to sell us products so that we will be prettier, less stinky, or somehow, just better to be around, and you have a recipe for people starting to feel a bit of self loathing or a lack of measuring up.

I hope that you'll consider attending the workshop if any of the above resonates with you. Sometimes if we have tried before and not felt successful at meeting a goal, it can feel scary or pointless to keep trying. I'm here to say that YOU ARE WORTH THE EFFORT and deserve to be at your very best every day.

Things My Yoga Students Say

One of the true gifts of being a yoga teacher is when you hear your students comment about how they have used what they have learned in yoga class in their own day to day lives. Yesterday, as students were gathering their things after class, a student stated "I love that you have taught us that we can do Mountain Pose when we are waiting in line. I did Mountain this weekend while waiting and I could feel the tension come out of my shoulders. Then I started thinking, boy, I bet the rest of the people in this line don't even know they could be doing this!"
Ah...the beauty and power of yoga practice! When we can take the lessons we are learning on the mat and start applying them in daily life, we begin to live our yoga. I hope you have an opportunity to take your yoga "off the mat' this week in some small or big way.
Be present. Be Peaceful.

Upcoming Class Details

Hello All!
December is here! My Yoga Moodra classes meet as scheduled this week and next week is the last week of classes for 2015!! (with the exception of the FREE Holiday class and celebration on Monday December 14th at Advent United Methodist Church in Eagan).

Yoga class dates are all set for January, so have a look at the left side of the page for details! Now that snow has started falling, I want to let you all know that I rarely cancel classes due to weather. I believe it has happened only once or twice in the 7+ years that I have been teaching. With that said, please use your own best judgment about whether you want to be out on the roads and remember that you can make-up missed classes at my other locations. If I do decide to cancel class, I will send an email reminder out at least 90 minutes prior to class and will also post any cancellations here on the blog.

We took some pictures in yoga class a few weeks ago and a couple of them are now a part of a Yoga Moodra Facebook page. So...like us on Facebook!

I have had a couple of requests for gift certificates for Yoga Moodra. I can happily provide these in any dollar amount, so let me know if you want to purchase one (or add the suggestion to your Christmas list).

Finally, the Black Friday sale which offers a hefty discount on my January Workshop entitled Live Your Yoga: Love Your Body and Transform Your Health ends TONIGHT! If you have been considering this month long workshop that is meant to provide you with support and yoga teachings that teach healthy living, then take advantage of this special pricing. ($129 instead of the $179 rate online). I know it's a busy time and there are lots of things that are vying for your attention, but I hope that you'll put your own health first and get some time just for you on your January calendar (and while the price is so darned good!) Click on the website button at the left top of the page to go and register now. You know you want to...follow that healthy instinct and give yourself the gift of better health in 2016.

Old Friends

Friendships are truly something to cherish and be grateful for. I love meeting new people and getting to know people from different backgrounds and circumstances. Today I talked with a friend of mine that I have known since college. I cherish that wonderful easy flow of conversation that comes from knowing someone else really well and the feeling of deep trust and comfort that makes everything easy and relaxed. So today I am thankful for friends. I'm thankful for those I have known for more than 30 years, as well friendships that are being established and growing now.
Here's to friendship!

Fire

This time of year, when it gets dark and feels cold, I love the light and warmth of a wood burning fire. It feels so great to snuggle up with a glass of wine and a blanket and hang out by the fire. I hope you are finding ways to stay warm today.

Coffee

Sitting here in my PJ's reading the morning paper and drinking coffee. One of my favorite things. I love it when I have time to be leisurely in the morning as opposed to having to rush out the door. I hope you have some time to relax and take time for things that you enjoy this weekend!

2 more days of the gratitude blog....please feel free to add your own comments.

The Start of the Holiday Season

I love Christmas. I even like Black Friday because it has been a tradition of mine to officially start my holiday shopping, decorating, and celebrating the season on this date. As I write this, I have already been out for a bit of shopping and soon will be off with friends for our annual Black Friday gathering. While I will not continue to blog each day about what I am grateful for once the month of November ends, I am going to try to continue this new habit to see the blessings and all that there is to be grateful for in each day. I hope today brings you many things to be grateful for!

Happy Thanksgiving!!!

I hope that you are having a day to be with people you care about. Along with Thanksgiving, today is also my 27th wedding anniversary. So, today I am celebrating and thankful for love.
Have a peaceful day and a day full of gratitude!

Thankful for Work

Today I am thankful for meaningful work. I feel so lucky to have 2 part-time jobs (yoga teacher and clinical social worker) that are challenging and rewarding to me in so many ways.
While the old saying about no one wishing on their death bed that they'd spent more time at the office may be true, I hope that the work and tasks you do today bring you a sense of accomplishment and joy.

The Moon!

I love a full moon on a clear night. I can't say exactly why, but it feels calming and somehow magical to have the night sky illuminated with a big full moon. Ever since the movie Moonstruck (anybody remember that one?) I have paid a bit more attention to the moon, to the point that if I awaken at night and see moonlight flowing into the windows, I WILL get out of bed to have a look.
The Moon is full tonight and the sky is clear for now. Have a look! Gorgeous!

Possibility

Today I am grateful for the idea of possibility. If we truly start to ponder all the capacity and strength that each of us have, there is so much that we can do! I happened to run across this lovely quote today and wanted to share it:

"You are ready and able to do beautiful things in this world." Jim Carrey

So, we've heard it before, but quit thinking small and quit talking yourself out of something new that you are yearning to do. The world is in need of courageous people that are willing to step out and share what they have to offer to make the world a better place. Have a beautiful Sunday!

Sweat!

Today I am thankful for a good sweat! I took a hot yoga class this morning and love the intensity of the heat and how cleansing it feels to sweat profusely.

Humor!

I love to laugh....who doesn't??? Today I am thankful for all things funny, silly and humorous.

A few updates: As a reminder, we DO NOT  have yoga class next week during the Thanksgiving Holiday week.

The new schedule for Yoga Moodra classes at all 3 locations is now set. See the sidebar for class dates, times, cost. Put the class dates on your calendar now so that you have time set aside in the New Year for your yoga practice.

If you have not yet had a chance, please take a moment to look at my brand new website. You can move between this blog and the website simply by clicking the Website button at the top left of the page (above the follow by email). This blog can be viewed from my new website as well, by going to the MORE page heading and selecting Blog from the drop down menu. Cool huh? Let me know what you think of yoga-moodra.com!!

While on the website, also have a look at my month-long January workshop titled Live your Yoga: Loving Your Body and Transforming Your Health. Anyone who is serious about making some health changes in the New Year should consider it! We often need at least 21-28 days to solidify a new habit, so the workshop takes place throughout the month of January to provide you with support you need to change your health for the better. Sometimes we wait until there is a health crisis or some other kind of "wake-up call" to action. Really, is there anything more important than your good health?

Finally, be on the look-out next week for my first-ever Black Friday deal!! Because it is a holiday week and I don't want you to miss out, the deal will be good for one week. Stay tuned!!

Fresh Starts

Today I am thankful that each day (and really each moment) is an opportunity for a fresh start and a new beginning. While we may try hard each day, sometimes we have to admit that we were not at our best. Maybe we were unnecessarily harsh with someone, or maybe we just ended up wasting time that could have been better spent.

A fresh start means that we can apologize or clear the air with someone if we need to and then let go and move on while trying to learn from our mistakes and errors. We can quit obsessing about our to do list and simply begin.

Start fresh today, do your best, and make it count!

Poetry

Today I am thankful for poetry and a well turned phrase. As I wrote yesterday, I love to read. I think there is something extra magical about well written poetry. When it's good, it seems to touch the heart and capture the "essence" of a feeling or experience.

Tuesday, November 17, 2015

Books

I love to read! When I can, I try to read about 2 books a month. I'd be really smart by now if I was reading only non-fiction! Even reading fiction, I love the fact that it opens your mind to new ideas and circumstances and offers opportunities to see events through a character's perspective. I'd love to hear about your favorite titles, or anything else that has you feeling grateful today.
Peace!

Surprises

I guess I was so busy enjoying the beauty of the day yesterday, that I forgot my daily gratitude post! So, I'll do 2 today!

First, wasn't yesterday a fabulous surprise? To have 61 degree weather in mid-November is a true blessing. I did some errands with the sunroof open and found myself giddy over the surprising warmth and beauty of the day.

Second, I am thankful today for dedicated yoga students! So many of you have been participating in my classes consistently for several years. What a delight! I am thrilled that you have made yoga a part of your schedule and your life. Some of you have shared how you feel yoga practice has been helpful to you. I'd love to hear more about what the practice of yoga has meant in your life.
Thanks to all of you for being a blessing.

Compassion

Today, as news of the tragedy and violence in Paris touches us all, I am thankful for compassion. It is important to remember that there is goodness and beauty in the world, even in the midst of pain. Sometimes that beauty shows up in the care and actions of others. Practice compassion today. Be helpful and gentle wherever and whenever you can. There are more of us than them and love is more powerful than hate.

"Nothing is so strong as gentleness. Nothing is so gentle as real strength." St Francis de Sales

Peace to all today

Today I am thankful for music! I love sad love songs, head banger rock songs, the blues, classical, and even a bit of rap and country or bluegrass. It's all so good and so full of emotion. Put on your favorite song today and enjoy.

Thankful for healing

Re-Post

After some questions about how I got started as a yoga teacher, I decided to re-post something I wrote several months ago. Today I am thankful for the body and it's AMAZING ability to heal. And I am thankful that part of my healing journey resulted in becoming a yoga teacher!

Trauma, Transformation, and Yoga

Some of you may be aware of my story about "how I decided to become a yoga teacher." Usually if I get asked this question, it is just a minute or 2 before the start of class, so my answers are brief and don't really tell the full story. I want to share my story here, as I think that many of you will be able to relate to the changes that happened in my life after a difficult and painful experience.

In July of 2004, I had a motorcycle accident that resulted in a crush injury to my left foot. After 2 orthopedic surgeries, I knew I wanted to return to the active person that I had been before the accident. I had started a one time a week yoga practice about a year prior to my accident and absolutely fell in love with the serenity and calm that yoga brought to my overactive mind. As a mental health therapist, I had now found a whole new set of tools that were helpful with not just physical flexibility, but mental clarity and flexibility as well! I was personally starting to see some great physical changes too. I began eating less junk and was in touch with how my body was feeling. I lost 10 pounds and felt calmer and stronger in every aspect of my life.

So, what a great blessing it was to have a yoga practice to return to as I was recovering from my accident and injury!!  My first few classes had me coming in on crutches and wearing an orthopedic boot. I literally did maybe 3 or 4 of the postures, and would rest or find savasana during the rest of the class. During final relaxation,  I would feel this amazing sense of compassion and care sweep over me. I imagined that I was being held in God's hands and I began to trust that I would come through my pain and eventually recover.

As time went on, and I felt stronger and my body healed, I began to feel that maybe I had something to offer to others through yoga. I had come through a traumatic accident, and yoga had been a huge part of my recovery both mentally and physically. Maybe there were other people out there that needed yoga's power. Maybe because of my experience, I could help others find healing emotionally and physically. These thoughts would not let me go, so I decided to step way out of my comfort zone and take my first yoga teacher training class. Here I was, a 42 year old woman, with no background in fitness. I was never a jock. I liked playing golf, walking, and doing yoga....but I wasn't particularly strong, fit or bendy! I was scared that the others in the training would laugh me out of the room!! Luckily for me, in my first training what was emphasized was the notion that there is a "place in the yoga community for everyone" and the idea that yoga wasn't a competition or a place for comparisons and judgment.

So here I am, nearly 11 years after my accident, and more than 6 years have passed since I completed my yoga training! What a blessing and a gift to share the power of yoga with others! Out of my accident, out of trauma, recovery, and feeling transformed by my yoga practice, I am now in a place in life where I get to share the healing and spirit-filled aspects of yoga practice with other people. It is my deepest hope and life's dream to be a conduit for healing, to help others to step out of their own comfort zone, so that they may discover the deep truth that yoga lays plain: We are all full of goodness and light and have gifts we need to bring to the world. When we say "Namaste" we are acknowledging our divine nature, and our connection to one another and the larger world.

Maybe as you read this, you're recalling your own challenge with an illness, a trauma, or an injury. Maybe like the old me, you have a deeply held idea that yoga is "for flexible and fit people" or maybe you worry as I did that others will judge you and laugh you out of the room. If you are ready to step out of your comfort zone, and want to be open to the opportunity for greater health, better body awareness, and a calmer mind and spirit, get it touch with me !! If my classes and teaching style are a good fit for you, fantastic! If not, let me help you find your space in the yoga world....there is a place in the yoga community for EVERYONE.

Walking

It's yet another fabulous fall day! I went for a walk this morning and realized that I am SO grateful to be able to walk without pain. As some of you know, I had a motorcycle accident 11 years ago that resulted in a crush injury to my left foot. I now have 4 plates and 17 screws in my foot as a result of orthopedic surgery! It took nearly 3 years after the accident for me to heal. While I still have chronic swelling in my left foot (so no 3 inch heels for this gal!) I can walk without pain. What a miracle. I'm thankful for the great medical care I received and the gift of walking!

Technology

Today I am thankful for technology. While I am probably the first to admit that tech is not something I love and feel much aptitude for, it is amazing how much it has become a part of our daily lives. Currently I am working on a website for Yoga Moodra, (which will be ready to go soon). The fact that I can communicate with my yoga students via email, cell phone, and this blog is simply fantastic. How did we ever do things before??!!
Today I see that this blog has now surpassed 12,000 page views. Unreal. Thanks for reading!! Thanks for sharing your own gratitude comments here too. Be Thankful and have a great day!

Sunday morning

This morning I am ever so grateful for a good night's sleep. I am lucky and do not have major sleep issues like some, but there is something so fabulous about sleeping deeply and waking feeling rested and ready to go!

Sunshine!

What a lovely clear Saturday! Bright blue sky and lots of SUNSHINE! My favorite!! I think I will go our for a walk this afternoon so that I have time to enjoy the sun's warmth (and build my Vitamin D reserves!). Today I am thankful for sunshine.

Thanks for eggs!

I just finished having a yummy toasted bagel and egg sandwich. One of my favorite ways to do breakfast. For some reason, eggs have started tasting really good to me in recent years, especially cage free or organic eggs. If you haven't compared a typical grocery store egg with an organic or cage free variety, you don't know what you are missing!

Beyond the fact that I like eggs, I am reminded of a story that was told to me by my now 90 year old friend Joe, who is a Holocaust survivor. After the war, he lost his entire family, except for his sister. He found her in a hospital after the war recuperating from her concentration camp experience. When Joe asked his sister what she would like to eat, she replied "Oh, I would love to have an egg!" What a simple and profound thing. Makes you feel pretty darned grateful for all of the food choices you have each day, right?

So, I'm grateful for eggs. Share with me what you are grateful for today as we continue the month long 'attitude of gratitude' here on the blog!

Another day of Gratitude

Today I am thankful for good health. I am taking my mother in today for a same-day surgery (minor) so it brings to mind how blessed we are when our health is good. Today I feel well rested, clear headed, and ready to face the day (with the help of coffee!). Often, it is only when we are sick that we realize how much we take for granted our good health.

Thankful

Today I am thankful for GOLF! I am amazed that I will have an opportunity this afternoon to play a round of golf in NOVEMBER...in MINNESOTA!

Please share with me what you are grateful for here on the blog! Cultivate an attitude of gratitude!

Happy November!!

For me, the month of November always highlights the idea of gratitude.  We typically give thanks on our national holiday of Thanksgiving, but why not make this a more consistent and daily practice?? I am going to be more deliberate about practicing gratitude this month by posting one thing that I am grateful for each day on this blog for the month of November. Please join me by adding your comments about gratitude. The act of writing down what we cherish makes the process more deliberate and meaningful.
It is already November 3rd, so I am behind! I'll catch up by naming 3 things today!

1. Can you guess? I am thankful for YOGA! Not only has it been a healing practice in my own life, I absolutely love teaching and sharing the gift of yoga with others.
2. I am thankful for relationships. What a gift to have a loving spouse, fabulous sons, and good friends and neighbors.
3. I am thankful for the beauty that presents itself in the changing of the seasons. It's pretty amazing when flowers bloom in spring and when trees "show their colors" every fall. Our natural world is a wonder.
Ok...your turn! Post your comments if you'd like, or keep your own gratitude journal this month!!

Changes

I've been thinking about what helps people make changes in their lives. I remember in graduate school learning that "anxiety and crisis brings about change." While most of us probably spend time trying to avoid anxiety and crisis whenever possible, it is true that when we get uncomfortable enough in our current circumstances, that we are more willing to try to change.

I suppose this is why so many folks create and then do not follow through with New Years Resolutions. I'm guessing that people think they "should have a resolution" so they set a goal around something they know would be good to do, but then have trouble following through since they were really not powerfully motivated ( or sufficiently stressed by the status quo) to begin with.

The people that seem to stick with changes and new routines seem to do so for a number of reasons: One, they have thought about what needs to change for awhile and finally have a moment of clarity or an event that propels them forward. Two, people that make big changes usually start small. They don't try to change everything, they begin with one clear objective and when that feels successful, then they have the reinforcement they need to add on and make additional changes that make sense to them. Third, making changes is hard and can be scary: so having supportive friends or family, or a network of folks that care about you can make a huge difference. You'll hear people talk about having a workout buddy, or weight loss programs that provide group or individual support.  This support is in place because folks recognize how helpful and powerful it can be.

One of the things I have noticed as a yoga teacher is that so many of you have invited friends or family to join you in your yoga practice. In many instances, you and the person you welcomed are still participating in yoga together! Not only are referrals nice for me as a small business owner and teacher, but it is SO super gratifying to see people find a healthy habit that they love and can stick with. If you are someone who has invited or brought someone to class....thank you. You provided that person with some support to try something new. Good for you! It's pretty amazing to consider that you may be responsible for someone else's journey toward a healthy life!

Strength and Courage

Most of us tend to think of really big acts of bravery when we hear the word courage. Certainly, facing a major illness, dealing with loss, and facing violence or fearful situations requires courage and lots of strength. Yet, for many of us, we need to call upon our strength and resolve anytime we step out of our comfort zone to try something new. I think yoga can teach us a great deal about how to address life's uncertainties and vulnerabilities and help us find deep strength and courage within.

I was at a yoga training last week that was made up of mostly "non-yogis" as the participants. It brought me back to how hard it can be to simply try something new (especially as we get older....we get pretty set in our ways and pretty invested in looking like we are in control).  For many of the folks that were there, they had never done yoga before and you could tell that the experience was a bit intimidating for some of them. Sometimes we take for granted what we know and are comfortable doing. If you remember your very first yoga class, I'll bet it felt rather overwhelming and unfamiliar. In yoga tradition, they talk about approaching yoga practice with "a beginners mind." In other words, act as if you know nothing about yoga or how bendy you are, and just try postures and breath as if for the first time. A beginners mind can help us to be curious about what is going on, it can help us stay present (when we are learning a new skill we are focused like a laser beam, right??) and when we are simply 'beginners' we have no pre-conceived ideas about how good we should be at something and can release perfectionistic thinking.

Can it feel a bit scary to be a beginner? YES. Call upon your own internal strength, wisdom and courage to try something new or to do something in a new way. Build and strengthen your "courage" muscles both on the yoga mat and off....just as you would the muscles of your body....slowly, deliberately and consistently. Be Bold. Have strength. Practice being courageous.

Just had to share this!

Reading Health magazine tonight and ran across this little tidbit!
"Women who did 22 yoga poses several times a week for 12 weeks reported more desire, increased arousal, and better orgasms, according to a study in the Journal of Sexual Medicine."

Nuff said! I hope to see you all on the mat as new yoga class sessions start in September! :) While it is not stated in the quote I shared, I would guess that there are parallels for men that practice yoga and their sexual wellness too. After all, when we start to be more present and aware, we truly live in the here and now and can fully experience each moment.

We are physical, emotional, spiritual, and sexual beings. It's all part of life and the human experience. Yoga as a practice can assist us as we seek to "yoke" or bring all the aspects of our being into a sense of wholeness.

The Good thing is....the bad thing is.....

Hey all!
The good thing is.....I have official dates all set for fall yoga! I am really excited to get back to a routine and to seeing some faces that I have missed over the summer.

The bad thing is.....it is now mid-August and summer is slipping by fast! My summer yoga class on Monday's has one more class left after today (next Monday August 24th at 4:30pm). Even if you are not registered, remember that you are welcome to pop in and pay a drop in fee of $10/class. I hope that you have all had an opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors and all the splendor that Mother Nature provides by getting out to do some gardening, hanging out in a lawn chair, or doing some evening stargazing. Enjoy these last days of summer. I will look forward to seeing all of you in yoga class again in September!! See the side panel with class dates, locations, times and cost.

Peace!

What are you thinking about?

So many of us have the same thoughts that loop through our minds all day long. We have a tendency to look for and to ruminate about negative things, as an effort to figure out a way to keep bad things from happening to us. So, a nice experience quickly fades from memory, but a negative experience will hang out in our minds as we re-play it over and over again. What a bummer.

What if we made an active decision to think about what was good? This is at the essence of a gratitude practice, but in addition to just counting our blessings, maybe we can re-train our minds so we see the good in the everyday, the commonality among people, the effort behind actions we don't understand. We can be so quick to criticize others and create distance. If we step back and re-think things, and remind ourselves that everyone is just out there doing their best, then maybe some of the harshness and judgments fall away. It's true, all of us as people are imperfect and we make mistakes all day long. Yet it is also true that we are getting so many things right. Take time to see the small acts of kindness going on all around you, the ongoing efforts of so many despite huge odds, and be thankful to be a part of this amazing journey called life.

The Sun is shining.....are you?

What will you do to let your light shine and be bright today? Don't hold back. Be creative. Be a problem solver. Seek common ground. Share a kind and uplifting word with someone who needs it. Don't wait. The world is a better place when we all act with courage and kindness. Let your yoga practice and your time on the mat help you quiet down enough to remember how very much you have to offer. Then get out there and be shiny!!!

What's your favorite yoga pose?

I have a few yoga poses that I love. What about you? Tell me your favorite pose or poses and why you like them or how they make you feel. To get us started, here are a couple of my very favorites:

Forward Fold: I love the release, the quiet, and the sense of calm in this pose.

Reverse Warrior: I love the extension and upward movement and lift in this posture. It's a great blend of extension and action mixed with a sense of quiet openness and being willing to receive something new.

Mountain Pose: Might seem silly, but I love the focus on quiet, solid energy and finding a sense of strength and calm while standing still.

Ok....please weigh in....I'd love to hear your thoughts. We'll save the poses we hate for another blog post! (They have benefits and things to teach us as well!)

May you be happy....may you be healthy....may you live with ease.

Updates

The end of June is fast approaching! Yikes, time sure does fly by in the summer! As a reminder, this week is the last week of class for the current yoga session at all 3 locations. My Tuesday class at Glendale and my Thursday class at All Saints will be "on hiatus" after this week for the remainder of the summer and will re-start fall sessions in September.

I will have one class session in July and August at Advent United Methodist Church in Eagan. The class meets Monday's from 4:30pm-5:30pm. We will take 2 weeks off around the 4th of July, and the new class session will begin on Monday July 13th. Class dates are July 13-August 24th (no class on 8/3). Cost for the 6 class session is $50.

Finally, if you have not done so yet, please mark your calendars and plan to attend my first ever FREE Outdoor Community Yoga Class on Tuesday July 21st from 6-7pm. We will practice on the lawn at Glendale United Methodist Church and donations for the local food shelf will gladly be accepted. The event goes on rain or shine (we will move indoors if the weather turns nasty). Bring your friends and neighbors and lets have a fun-filled fabulous outdoor practice as a community of yogis!!

See you all on the mat!

Micro and Macro

Ever wonder what your yoga teacher thinks about as you are resting in final relaxation?? Perhaps each class and each teacher may bring to mind something different, but here are a few of the things that typically float through my mind in the last minutes of class:

I pause to count the number of students in the room and feel blessed to have folks that show up for my classes each week

I call you each by name in my mind and ask that you are blessed and that you take a peaceful loving  heart with you as you leave class

I am in awe of the power that yoga has to transform lives and the world

The bottom line is this: come to class for your own personal needs (whether it is for some peace and relaxation, some added flexibility, or to gain strength or a firmer backside) but remember that yoga is not just powerful on a micro or individual level....it is a powerful practice on the macro level too!

When you leave a yoga class feeling calm, centered and aware, it has a profound impact on those you interact with. Maybe you're calmer as you wait in line at the grocery store, or maybe you feel a bit of compassion for someone who might not be making good choices in traffic, or you are less likely to take the bait when a co-worker tries to press your buttons. When you think about yoga in this way, the idea that yoga can be a change agent to bring about more peace in the world is not some whoo-whoo idea. When you are healthier, calmer, and more peaceful with your self and share that with others, the ripple effect is felt far and wide.

Thanks for being in class. Whether you realize it or not, you are bringing some peace and light to your own life, and you can share that peace with your family, your community, and your world! COOL, eh??

Staying Present

Without going into a lot of detail, let me just say that today was a challenge. Our dear family kitty has become quite ill and we are really uncertain about what is best for her and for all of us. I guess lots of things in life are like that....you try to make the best choices you can, given the information that is available, while trying to listen to your own heart.

Thank goodness once again for yoga practice! I can't tell you how many times I had to remind myself to just "stop and breathe" today. I know that so many people are facing challenges and decisions much larger than the one my family struggles with today. Whatever problems or decisions you face, remember that the present moment is all that we really have. Enjoy, feel some gratitude, and resolve not to waste a minute!

Teaching Beginners

I had an opportunity to teach a brand new group of yoga students this weekend. Many in the class had never done yoga before. Believe me, I love and adore my long-time dedicated yogis, yet it is always refreshing and fun to introduce new people to the powerful practice of yoga! Nothing brings me more joy than a surprised and delighted beginner that makes comments like, "I never thought I could do yoga" or "that was really fun" or "the tension I came in with has totally disappeared." As I have said before, I have found deep healing for myself on the mat, so when I hear new people getting excited about how the practice might help them physically or emotionally, it is a true thrill.

Thanks to those of you who have been with me in yoga class over the long-term. Your continued practice is an inspiration to me and such a great example to those that are just considering the idea of trying yoga. When you invite a friend to class, you are offering them an opportunity not only for some fun and relaxation, but potentially opening a door to better long term health for them. What a gift!

Breathe deep this week and enjoy the first week of June!! Thanks for sharing your yoga journey with me!

recipe...sort of!

A few weeks back, I got a request to post recipes on this site. A laugh out loud moment for me, as I do not consider myself a culinary whiz! However, I DO like to eat! I thought I'd share my current favorite snack in case there are some of you that are looking for a new treat.

Ingredients:
Wasa Light Rye
Feta Cheese crumbled
Avocado
Grape Tomato

Take a tablespoon or so of avocado and spread it on 2 Wasa Crisps. Sprinkle a few crumbles of feta cheese on top and then top it off with a few sliced grape tomatoes. Add a dash of salt if you'd like. I really like this combination of flavors and its a great way to use up a bit of leftover avocado.  Even my husband likes this treat! Once my basil is ready to go....I would imagine a bit of basil (or other herbs you like) on top could make it even more scrumptious.

Happy Snacking!

Pose details and paying attention

As many of you know, I try to provide lots of information in my classes about how to 'set-up' a yoga posture or pose. This is not because I am trying to get everyone into some version of perfection, but rather, an attempt to keep everyone safe and free from injury. As rushed and distracted as we sometimes can be in this life, slowing down and really considering how we want to come into a pose and how we will get out of or release a pose can help us be more aware, more mindful and safer in the process.

Yoga doesn't really do us much good if we are not paying attention and end up hurting ourselves in class. Being distracted and attempting to multi-task outside of yoga class usually doesn't work well either. We end up misunderstanding other people, we forget things, and we don't do quality work when we are trying to do more than one thing at a time. So once again, we can practice important life lessons every time we are on our yoga mats. Lessons like learning to slow down, to think things through, to trust your body and LISTEN to it. We learn that we get more out of each day when we are  deliberate and mindful instead of rushing and and trying to speed through life. If we start really paying attention, we will probably find that we listen more effectively. Suddenly we can discern what is truly important over what is actually pretty trivial. We can approach each day feeling more relaxed and at peace as it dawns on us that there is plenty of time to do things well.

Mother's Peace Day

I remember learning about the origins of Mother's Day several years ago, but had forgotten them until I saw some facts posted online about Mom's Day today.

Mother's Day actually started with  Julia Ward Howe proclaiming a "Mother's Peace Day" in response to the violence and the loss of so many sons and young lives in the Civil War.  I really cannot fathom what that must feel like as a mother to watch your own flesh and blood leave for war, be it the Civil War or Afghanistan.

Over the years, like so many days and events, the date we observe for Mother's Day now seems to be about "stuff." It's become pretty commercial. Don't get me wrong, I love a bouquet of flowers or a thoughtful card from one of my boys as much as the next Mom, but it makes me a bit sad that the original flavor and intent of the day has been lost. Whether you have given birth or not, Mother's Peace Day really started as a day for all women to stand together against violence and promote peace.

Maybe you are grieving the loss of your own Mom today, or maybe you are grieving the loss of children you were unable to conceive or raise.  Perhaps you are a Mom who has lost a child through violence or war. I'm sure your heart hurts. Your loss is huge and unimaginable. No matter your circumstance, whether this is a day of pain or a day of joy, may all of us as women stand together. Maybe we can get the men to stand with us as well!! The next time we step on our yoga mats and set an intention for peace, lets really make it count. Let's work for a better future for the next generation with each breath. A future of peace and long lives for all of the world's children.

PEACE....and Happy Mother's Peace Day!

Springtime!

Wow! What a fabulous first weekend of May in MN!!! The weather feels even sweeter and more miraculous when I realize that we had our last snow of the season last year (3 inches!) during the first week of May.

I love sunshine and warm weather and was lucky enough to have the time for a walk in the woods this morning. On this walk, I observed ferns about to unfurl, birds singing, leaves emerging, grass growing, and little spots of unexpected color and flowers along the way. Best of all.....no mosquitos yet! Mother nature is absolutely inspiring.

I hope that each of you find extra time to get outside this month. Take a walk outside on your lunch break or consider doing some yoga postures in the great outdoors. Spring is here....and summer is fast approaching. If you plan to continue or want to get started with a yoga practice, May/June Yoga Moodra sessions are starting this week and next. I'm also in the early stages of planning a free outdoor summer yoga event/class this year....stay tuned! In the meantime, use the month of May to take a look around....soak in some beauty and feel a sense of wonder as you observe the new energy nature is putting forth. Breathe deep. Stay present. Feel grateful.

Wildflowers

I've been sharing this Rumi quote in yoga classes this week:

Very little grows on jagged rock. Be ground. Be crumbled, so wildflowers will come up where you are.

Rumi has such a way with words, right?? For me, this quote is all about letting go of my need to be perfect, to have everything running smoothly and being strong at all times. Actually, I think we get in touch with some of what is best within us during times when we feel a bit ground up and crumbled.

It's no fun to go through hard times, but the easy life is not promised. All we can hope for is to bring our best game to the field each day, and hope that some wildflowers can come up where we are!

Have a fabulous last day of April! Peace, Joy, and Wildflowers to all!

CLASS CANCEL

Due to illness, I have decided to cancel class tonight, April 23rd at All Saints Lutheran at 7pm. We will add a class to the existing session, so rather than ending next Thursday, April 30, we will end the current session on May 7th.
Thanks for your understanding!

Attachment to our own ideas

As some of you know, I am sick (AGAIN!) for the 3rd time in about eight weeks. I am really crabby! So, what's underneath this attitude of crabbiness??  I "think" that because I am an active and pretty healthy person, that I should somehow NOT get sick. We all get attached to these kinds of ideas and belief systems that we think are real and true. The real reality is that I am human, and for some reason, I have run across 3 viruses that I could not shake.

Have you ever had a plumber come to your house to do a repair or installation of some kind? They announce to you that they are going to shut your water off for a period of time.....and suddenly, you start to feel that you are trapped in the Sahara....you are thirsty, there are dishes to wash, the cat water bowl should be re-filled!! In some ways, this is how I start to feel whenever I am ill and low energy. I start obsessing about all of the tasks that are NOT being accomplished and all that I should and could be doing, but cannot, because of illness. It's really pretty dumb, but I am guessing (hoping!) that I am not alone in this feeling.

Yoga is one way that I can let go of this ridiculous thinking pattern and story. I work on letting go and accepting things as they are in this moment. I don't have to get attached to ideas that I have to accomplish certain things every day or else the day was a waste.

Maybe some of you can relate to this. It's always a good exercise to try to objectively look at the thoughts behind the emotions that are causing us anger, sadness, or irritation. If I can instead change the story, and consider all of the magnificent things that my body is currently doing to heal itself and restore, well, that's pretty amazing. So for now, I will sit near my tissue box, rest, and try to be patient and accept that I will soon be well again in good time.

Here's to good health and patience!

Contest Winner!

Thanks to everyone who took some time to check in here on the blog and a special thanks to those of you that shared comments and feedback about blog format/content etc. The winner of the drawing for $50 toward the May-June Yoga Moodra session is Brenda P!!! YAY!

One of the best things for me about being a yoga teacher is the fact that so many of you have been students of mine for a VERY long time. Whether you are new to a class or someone who has been taking my classes for years, I appreciate you! Even more, I am thrilled that so many of you see the value of a consistent yoga practice. Yoga truly is a practice for living and provides so many benefits for body, mind and spirit!

Finally, so many of you responded to my own personal story of coming to yoga and my journey to becoming an instructor. The value that comes from hearing another person's story of struggle and success is truly powerful. I'd love to include some of my student stories here. If you'd be open to sharing some thoughts about your own personal experiences that "hooked you" on a yoga practice....I'd love to hear about it and include it on the blog. The goal? Connecting and reaching out to others that might be sitting on the sidelines wondering if yoga might be helpful for them. Who knows, your own experience and willingness to try may inspire someone else....Cool eh??

Peace and wellness!

contest update

I have been getting lots of good feedback and ideas and will be working on setting up a system for my students to receive an email when I post something new on the blog. If you are checking 'interesting' or 'funny' after a post....I have no info about who you are....so if you want to be in the contest for the $50 off the next session, post a comment, or email me indicating you visited the blog along with some comments. As I have told many of you....I am a pretty clueless when it comes to technology, so I appreciate all ideas and tips. I will do what I can to make this a user friendly space!
Namaste!

a quote about fear

I read this quote this week about fear. Maybe it will resonate with some of you. I don't think of myself as a 'fearful' person, but anxiety and self doubt can be forms of fear....I got that going on!

Here's the quote from Hafiz:

"Fear is the cheapest room in the house. I would like to see you living in better conditions."

10,705

A couple of weeks ago I wrote here that I would have to consider doing something to mark the event of getting to 10,000 page views on this blog. Then I went on vacation for a week, got sick when I got home, and ignored my blog completely. Today I see that I have surpassed the 10,000 mark by 705!!

Let's have some fun with this milestone. If you are a current student reading this blog, post a message on the blog about anything related to Yoga Moodra classes (what you enjoy, what you'd like to see more of on the blog or in class, etc). Last classes of the "winter" session

Snuggling in here with my laptop and my kitty who loves to join me on my lap and then starts sprawling across the keyboard.....making typing a bit of a challenge! Just thought I would post a reminder that the last classes of the "winter" session are happening this week (February 23-27).

As an optimistic person, I am calling the new session the "spring" session, even though classes start the week of March 9th...which is not exactly spring in MN.....but the next session will run until the end of April....so we should be experiencing springtime by then!!!
See the sidebar for class dates, costs, and other details for the new session! Please remember that you can attend a single class for a $10 drop in fee as well.

I don't always have much to go on about who might be reading or looking at this blog....but I do get an updated total of views. It looks like I am within 100 or so views to get to 10,000. Probably for big-time bloggers, they rack up numbers like that in a week.....but still, it is gratifying to know that people have 'a look' from time to time. I had considered offering some kind of cool prize to the 10,000 viewer.....but I'd have no way of knowing who you are!! So, let's just say this....I will plan on something special....maybe a giveaway, maybe a free class....something to mark the milestone of 10,000 views of the blog.....so stay tuned!

Feeling grateful!

Reading the local paper again!

In today's StarTribune, there was an article about health care consumers looking at alternative therapies and complimentary medicine to help them find relief from issues such as back pain and arthritis. The article reports a 74% increase in adult participation in yoga and tai chi since 2002.

I have personal experience when it comes to the healing properties of yoga....ever since my motorcycle accident 10 years ago. Look for more on my blog about my accident and how it lead me on the path to becoming a yoga teacher...coming soon! For now, I'll just close with a quote from today's newspaper article from Matthew Sanford ( a local yoga instructor who is also a paraplegic): "yoga....It's just a good way to live a better life."

In the Front Row

I was reading an article about "type A" exercisers in the newspaper this morning and the article described these folks as needing to be in the front row of their exercise or spin class so that they could work out the hardest (without someone slower in front of them slowing their mojo) and in an effort to get the instructors attention and praise. We live in a culture that thrives on competition and for many, having that challenge in their workout routine is part of the fun.

Not exactly what I find in my yoga classes.....and what a relief! I will often be the one to encourage students to come toward the front, particularly if they are new students so that they can see me and hear the cues as they are given. Most students seem reluctant to be in the front due to their own insecurity and fears that others will see them if they struggle. I hope that in my classes (and ideally in any yoga class) students feel free to explore their 'edge' and enjoy the full experience of yoga without being self conscious or fearful. I also hope that yoga allows a softness and lovingkindness to develop and emerge: a space where we feel a bit less critical of ourselves, and a bit more accepting of others.

Let go of seeking perfection and being competent every minute. The true learning in yoga comes in those times when we fall out of a pose or shake and quiver as we challenge our muscles. These moments have so much to teach us about how to persevere in times of struggle and to treat ourselves with a bit of gentle acceptance and grace. Whatever row or space you choose to roll out your mat, whether you prefer the front row or a practice space at the back of the room, know that you are engaged in a powerful practice that will change your life one breath and moment at a time.

ready to try?

If you are not a current student, but have some interest in trying out a yoga classes....please know that you are welcome....and you can pay for a single class/drop in at any time for $10. This applies if you are brand new to yoga, if you've been a former student and are considering a 'comeback' or if you have friends or relatives in town that just want to try some yoga.

Remember the old Life Cereal commercial with Mikey (Ok....dating myself here....try to keep up!) where one brother says to another "Try it.....You'll like it!" No sibling tricks here.....Getting out the door to try something new is often the hardest part....but I think I can safely say that you will be SO glad that you did! Yoga is an amazing practice....come and see what all the fuss is about!

Buy Bewilderment

Sell your cleverness and buy bewilderment~ Rumi

Doesn't it feel so uncomfortable to be out of control? To be unable to predict an outcome? To feel that you don't have an answer to another person's question? I'm not sure, but I think in this quote, Rumi is offering some relief with his words. Rumi is capturing the idea that we don't have to posture and act like we know everything all the time. We could admit we don't know rather than pretending and bluffing our way through with an answer that we think may be right. When we cling to being right and having all the answers, we don't give ourselves permission to consider another point of view, or to allow new information to change our opinions or perspectives.

The next time you find yourself fiercely defending a viewpoint or an idea, maybe it's time to let go of needing to be right. Stop and listen. Question and be befuddled. Be willing to be bewildered instead of so clever and correct. Who knows....maybe you'll discover something new.

Change

How do you go about making changes in your life? Do you do your best when others encourage and support you? How well do you do with change if you feel coerced, obligated, or criticized? If you are like many folks that are trying to make some positive changes in the New Year, why not try to add some support and encouragement...some kindness to the effort? We would never berate a child in order to try to get them to behave, so why do we criticize and put ourselves down when we want to create a new habit or learn to do something new?

Maybe we will all do better with our goals and our New Year Resolutions if we first resolve to be nice! Treat yourself with deep patience and kindness. Think about the ways that you can nurture good and healthy habits and let go of ideas that involve deprivation and doing without. Start from a place that is loving and accepting.

Happy New Year!

It is with both optimism and dread that I look ahead to the new year. The dread part comes from the fact that winter is long in these parts... it's a hard season for me....full of cold, quiet, and darkness. As an impatient person, the beauty and warmth of spring and summer seem so very far away. The optimism piece as I consider a new year is that part of me that tends to be hopeful and positive by nature....I love considering the fact that the next year will bring joy (and maybe some sadness, surprises, and heartbreak) that I cannot imagine at this time. It's a time of wonder and enormous potential.

Rather than get overwhelmed by the length of winter, or the big unknowns of a brand new year ahead, my yoga practice brings me back to the here and now. I remind myself that it is in THIS moment that I have an opportunity to be aware and can attempt to live life to the fullest. It can be too easy to reflect on and dwell on the past, and all too easy to get caught up in trying to control the future. So, for today, I will try to live in contentment and peace...easing off the throttle of goals, to do lists, and all the things that take me away from being here....right now.

Peace, prosperity, laughter, and joy to you and yours in this fabulous new start to 2015.
