Good Health and Yoga

It seems that yoga is in the news constantly. Maybe it catches my eye as an instructor, but yoga asana, breath work and a philosophy of mindfulness seem to be in every magazine and frequently in the daily press too.

Yoga Moodra now has a Facebook page, and last week I shared an article that outlines some recent research indicating yoga's value in preventing or alleviating osteoporosis. I feel certain that there will be more of this research in the future as individuals seek alternatives to reactive measures for "treating illness" and look instead for preventive treatments for better health. Yoga is becoming a part of the integrated health movement because health care professionals and yogis themselves have seen its valuable benefits for a variety of health concerns.

With all this in mind, I hope that those of you that are hesitant to try yoga will take a chance to experience the practice. There are lots of yoga styles and lots of yoga teachers out there; you surely can find a place for yourself in the yoga community. (That goes for the men out there too....yoga is NOT a girl thing and in fact was first practiced exclusively by men). Get in touch with me if you have questions about whether yoga practice is right for you. For those of you that are enjoying and already reaping the benefits of your yoga practice...tell others about it!

Whether you are returning to a yoga practice or just stepping onto the mat for the first time, I hope that you'll join me in a Yoga Moodra class. Make 2016 your best and healthiest yet!

New Class!

Along with the 3 weekly classes that I lead in area churches, I am pulling together a new class in a new location in January! The class will be held in a nice open space that belongs to Hilltop Family Chiropractic in Eagan (1121 Town Centre Drive).
Class dates will be Wednesdays from 4:30-5:30pm on January 6,13, 20, 27, and February 3 and 10.
Cost for 6 classes is $70. The room space will limit the number of participants, so don't delay if you are interested in participating in the class!
See the side bar on the left for the dates/times of my other on-going class sites.
Make yoga practice a part of a healthy and happy 2016. See you back on the mat very soon!

Holiday Stress Busting Tip

This Holiday season, vow to do only one thing at a time. Recent research on the brain tells us that "multi-tasking" is a myth. The brain can only think about one thing at at time, so if you are driving a car and talking on the phone, you are engaging in rapid shifts in attention, from the phone, to your driving, back to the phone, and to driving. You are not doing both tasks with optimal efficiency.

So, at this stressful time of the year, save yourself from multi-tasking. If you are driving; drive. If you are eating, sit down and eat and notice the food! Doing one thing at a time helps us to focus and be more effective at the task at hand. It also helps us feel less scattered and we're able to be more "present" with others.

Do one thing at a time. You'll enjoy the holidays more fully and feel more relaxed while you do.

One week from today....

In one week, the Christmas holidays will be over! After so much preparation and lead-up to the Holiday, sometimes the last week of December and early January can feel kind of like a letdown.
I think this may be yet another reason that the tradition of New Year's Resolutions got started (someday I'll have to see if I can research the origins). Certainly the end of one calendar year and the start of another year is a point in which we look back at the year that was, and begin to consider the year that lies ahead. Maybe we are also just a bit bored and discontent with the status quo, the darkness of winter, or not feeling our best after too many holiday parties, goodies, and dealing with tiresome relatives!

January 1st is a new beginning (although I'd argue that each moment and each day is an opportunity to start again) and a new year full of potential and possibility. I hope that all of you will join me in time together "on the mat" in 2016. If you are reading this as a potential "yogi" I encourage you to contact me by phone or email if you have questions about whether Yoga Moodra classes are a good fit for you. Have a look at the website for class information and read through the detailed description of the January Workshop titled Live Your Yoga: Love Your Body and Transform Your Health (meant just for those New Year's Resolutions!). Be deliberate about making some healthy decisions for yourself in 2016.

In the meantime, enjoy the next week. Merry Christmas!

Do you take your health for granted?

For most of us, we are busy people that take for granted our own good health. Even if we are experiencing health issues, or our bodies are sending us subtle or not so subtle messages that things are less than ideal, we often dismiss these cues and put off truly paying attention to our bodies.

Really, do you want to wait for a health crisis before you decide to make some positive changes? I'll bet that if you are like me, you have lots to do and lots of dreams that you are hoping to fulfill. Why not start NOW to be at your very best and feel that you are truly "firing on all cylinders?"

In 3 short weeks, we will be marking the end of another year and looking forward to 2016. I hope that you'll join me in my January Workshop entitled: Live Your Yoga: Love Your Body and Transform Your Health. It will be a month long effort to support, teach and nurture you as you begin a personal journey toward health, vitality and wellness in 2016.

Go to the website to register! Don't wait, only 5 spaces remain!

Holiday Class and Celebration

Just a quick reminder that I am offering all current and former Yoga Moodra students a FREE class and holiday gathering time THIS MONDAY, December 14th at Advent United Methodist Church (next to the Art House on Lexington Ave in Eagan). The class will run from 4:30-5:30pm and I'll bring some holiday treats and snacks for us to share from 5:30-6pm.

I appreciate each and every one of you! This free class is my Christmas gift and way of thanking each of you for bringing your energy and beautiful presence to each of my classes.
Hope to see you on Monday!

Slowing down

As the holiday season ramps up, sometimes it can start to make me a bit anxious as I try to "get everything done." This season, I am trying to be deliberate about slowing down. If you were in yoga class last week, I was repeating the theme of doing one thing at a time and being deliberate about each action. Unfortunately, we can see examples everywhere we go of people rushing and getting exasperated and it typically does not bring out the best in us!

So breathe deeply this December. Take time for walks and exercise and yoga and make deliberate choices about what is best for you and your family this holiday season. Use your yoga training to stay focused and calm and come back to your breath when you start to feel frazzled or stressed.

As a reminder, this is the last week of Yoga Moodra classes for 2015!!! I hope that all of you will plan to attend the FREE class and Holiday celebration that I have planned for next Monday December 14th. It is my gift to each of you this season, as what I love the most about holiday time is parties, celebrations, connection and TIME TO BE WITH others I care about.

Have a terrific week! Take it slow! See you on the Mat!

Reasons Why

Some of you may be wondering why I am choosing to offer the month-long yoga workshop in January called Live Your Yoga: Love Your Body and Transform Your Health.

First of all, I am really passionate about helping and supporting people to be their best. In my job as a therapist (clinical social worker) I help people "change their minds" about how they approach life problems and help them find their own internal resources to move through painful experiences.

Second, as many of you know, the practice of yoga has been a hugely important and healing part of my own life. (I have a page on my website called A Healing Journey that tells more about this if you are interested!) When you come across something that has been super helpful to you, naturally you want to tell others and hope that they can enjoy some of the benefits that you enjoy. This is the reason I became a yoga teacher: so that I can share the power of yoga teachings and practice with others in the hopes of making my small corner of the world a bit better place.

The workshop is intended for anyone with a desire to make some changes for the better in the New Year. For some, that may be weight loss, for others, it might be a change in their eating habits in order to feel better physically. I believe a reason why we struggle with healthy living is, at its core, a faulty belief system that we are somehow "less than" or unworthy of self love. Add a layer of shaming that is often a part of our consumer culture and media as a way to sell us products so that we will be prettier, less stinky, or somehow, just better to be around, and you have a recipe for people starting to feel a bit of self loathing or a lack of measuring up.

I hope that you'll consider attending the workshop if any of the above resonates with you. Sometimes if we have tried before and not felt successful at meeting a goal, it can feel scary or pointless to keep trying. I'm here to say that YOU ARE WORTH THE EFFORT and deserve to be at your very best every day.

Things My Yoga Students Say

One of the true gifts of being a yoga teacher is when you hear your students comment about how they have used what they have learned in yoga class in their own day to day lives. Yesterday, as students were gathering their things after class, a student stated "I love that you have taught us that we can do Mountain Pose when we are waiting in line. I did Mountain this weekend while waiting and I could feel the tension come out of my shoulders. Then I started thinking, boy, I bet the rest of the people in this line don't even know they could be doing this!"
Ah...the beauty and power of yoga practice! When we can take the lessons we are learning on the mat and start applying them in daily life, we begin to live our yoga. I hope you have an opportunity to take your yoga "off the mat' this week in some small or big way.
Be present. Be Peaceful.

Upcoming Class Details

Hello All!
December is here! My Yoga Moodra classes meet as scheduled this week and next week is the last week of classes for 2015!! (with the exception of the FREE Holiday class and celebration on Monday December 14th at Advent United Methodist Church in Eagan).

Yoga class dates are all set for January, so have a look at the left side of the page for details! Now that snow has started falling, I want to let you all know that I rarely cancel classes due to weather. I believe it has happened only once or twice in the 7+ years that I have been teaching. With that said, please use your own best judgment about whether you want to be out on the roads and remember that you can make-up missed classes at my other locations. If I do decide to cancel class, I will send an email reminder out at least 90 minutes prior to class and will also post any cancellations here on the blog.

We took some pictures in yoga class a few weeks ago and a couple of them are now a part of a Yoga Moodra Facebook page. So...like us on Facebook!

I have had a couple of requests for gift certificates for Yoga Moodra. I can happily provide these in any dollar amount, so let me know if you want to purchase one (or add the suggestion to your Christmas list).

Finally, the Black Friday sale which offers a hefty discount on my January Workshop entitled Live Your Yoga: Love Your Body and Transform Your Health ends TONIGHT! If you have been considering this month long workshop that is meant to provide you with support and yoga teachings that teach healthy living, then take advantage of this special pricing. ($129 instead of the $179 rate online). I know it's a busy time and there are lots of things that are vying for your attention, but I hope that you'll put your own health first and get some time just for you on your January calendar (and while the price is so darned good!) Click on the website button at the left top of the page to go and register now. You know you want to...follow that healthy instinct and give yourself the gift of better health in 2016.
